In recent years, the burden of infectious diseases has reduced or remained stable in Europe, thanks to strong commitments by the EU, aggressive targets, and cooperation among stakeholders. Still, diseases like HIV and tuberculosis remain public health concerns in Europe and around the world and are the focus of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 3.3. At Viatris, we commend the EU’s solidarity in addressing the burden of HIV and TB globally and call for continued partnership in the global fight against infectious diseases.

A Global Health Concern

Since HIV was first discovered in the 1980s, there have been over 80 million infections that have led to over 40 million deaths. The advent of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment has considerably reduced HIV morbidity, weakened transmission, and improved quality of life for people living with HIV. Although the global rate of new infections has been falling since 1996, HIV is still transmitted to 1,5 million people each year. In the WHO European Region, there were over 100.000 new infections in 2021, with rates increasing in some countries.1,2 The fight is not over, and Viatris is committed to doing our part.

Meeting Global Targets

UNAIDS had established a set of interim global targets for 2025 that need to be achieved to reach the 2030 HIV targets within the Sustainable Development Goals.

Viatris and HIV/AIDS

Viatris has an ongoing commitment to the HIV/AIDS community. Our goal is to provide ARV therapy equivalent to a total of 30 million patients, including more than 2 million children living with HIV/AIDS, between 2022 and the end of 2025.

We continue to work to bring newer, better and innovative ARVs to patients in need. In 2021, Viatris reduced treatment cost by over 10-fold with the introduction of a new pediatric formulation. We are also working to make HIV testing more accessible through the availability of rapid diagnostic tests for self-testing in low- and middle-income countries.

Our commitment to testing, prevention, and increased access to generic treatment extends to Europe, where HIV is still a public health concern. In Europe, we offer 14 different ARVs, with products available in almost all European countries. We are also working with the European AIDS Clinical Society to produce digital education content on managing HIV.
