European Policy Centre policy paper

Towards openness-based European preference in the pharmaceutical sector

Patient access to medicines is at the core of Viatris’ role as the largest medicines provider in Europe* and a key supplier of critical medicines across the region. We cover nearly half of the molecules on the EU Critical Medicines List and deliver over 140 million packs of critical medicines each year.

With a strong European footprint - including presence in 38 markets, 13 manufacturing sites, and an extensive partner network - we help ensure patients across Europe continue to access the medicines they need.

This European network, in combination with our global operations, support our commitment to safeguarding patient access to medicines through reliable, diversified, and resilient supply chains - grounded in the belief that no country can make every medicine it needs, and no medicine is made in every country.

We welcome the discussions organized today by the European Policy Centre with policy stakeholders - contributing to the ongoing EU debate on open economic security, public procurement and medicine supply resilience.

As Europe continues to advance discussions on these topics, it is essential to recognise that resilient medicine supply for patients depends on diversified, globally connected supply chains.

At Viatris, we believe patient access is best protected through supply chain resilience, trusted partnerships and procurement models that reward security of supply - not through restrictive localisation criteria.
