In this film produced for us by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions, PLATINEA is a standout example of how cross-sector collaboration can help address the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). As a founding partner, Viatris is proud to support this Swedish platform that unites stakeholders across healthcare, academia, and public policy to safeguard antibiotic access.
AMR is projected to cause 10 million deaths per year by 2050 and add $1 trillion in global healthcare costs. Europe needs models that not only address clinical use but also builds long-term supply resilience for critical medicines.
PLATINEA is designed to do exactly that. With 21 institutional partners, the platform works to promote rational antibiotic use, while also helping health authorities secure supply through market mechanisms, like the revenue guarantee model. This film produced for us by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions underscores how this model can inform wider EU approaches to AMR preparedness and access.
The film includes a personal perspective from Viatris Sweden’s Medical Affairs Lead, Anne Bergman, whose story reinforces why access to effective antibiotics remains a deeply human, as well as systemic, challenge.
Viatris believes that tackling AMR requires aligned policy, investment in supply resilience, and trusted multi-stakeholder platforms. PLATINEA is one such model – and a pathway for Europe to lead by example.
